What is the point of Mr. Keatings first class with the boys?

Mr. Keating's first class is all about illustrating the differences between his teaching style and who he is..... as opposed to the rest of the faculty. Keating begins the term by challenging his students to have the courage to think for themselves. This is something that no other teacher on the Weldon staff would do.
