One of the major challenges facing Bishop Jean Marie Latour when he arrives in New Mexico is gaining the trust of the people he came to serve. What were the difficulties that made this so hard, and how was he able to overcome them?

1) Difficulties moving through an unknown country;

"The difficulty was that the country in which he found himself was so featureless--or rather, that it was crowded with features, all exactly alike."

Upon his arrival;

"The Mexican priests there had refused to recognize his authority."

His credentials had not arrived and were questioned.
