Willy Loman is a gregarious, mercurial man with powerful aspirations to success. However, after thirty-five years working as a traveling salesman throughout New England, Willy Loman feels defeated by his lack of success and difficult family life. Willy wallows in his illusion of the American dream without the work ethic. His obsession with success is profoundly flawed and he brings the rest of his family down into his dysfunction.
Willy Loman is a tragic hero because he commits himself to an impossible dream, heriocally maintains the vision and dies rather than lives as an acknowledged failure.
