Linda is desparate for her sons to realise the seriousness of Willy's diminishing mental state, which, coupled with the. physical exhausion of travelling, is driving him to destruction:

She reveals that he deliberately drove his car into a bridge and she has found a rubber pipe connected to the boiler which suggests he is planning suicide.

Basically Linda tells the boys about Willy attempting to kill himself with the gas heater. She also tells them that the car "accidents" were not really accidents, rather they were suicide attempts.
