What painful promise does Biff make during the scene with Linda and her boys on page 35- 43?

I think my edition may be a little different from yours, but I think you mean the part where when Linda reveals how desperate their situation is financially, and the terrible emotional state Willy is in. Biff promises that he will look after the family -

'I'll live here in my room, and I'll get a job. I'll keep away from him...He'll settle for half my pay cheque. He'll be all right.'(p45)

The promise s painful aas Biff has never been settled, and has no respect for his father since he found him with another woman.
