Linda wonders where all of the people that Willy knew are. She asks why Willy did what he did, and says that she has just made the last payment on the house today, and that they are free and clear. For me, this scene has always represented Linda's combination of naïveté and her role as homemaker. As a wife and mother, she was the eternal optimist, always looking forward..... as a homemaker, she kept to the budget, raised the children, and balanced her family's needs and wants. The house was paid for, the job wasn't necessary...... but the family needed to take precedence. Linda knew..... Willy just didn't understand.
