Who is Dave Singleman? What does it mean to die the “death of a salesman”?

Dying the "Death of a Salesman," would be based on the amount of people (clients) who knew and loved you. Dave Singleman was a traveling salesman (he was 84), who never had to leave his hotel room to make a sale because he was so well liked. Clients from all over New England traveled to his funeral........ this is the kind of life (or death) Willy wishes for. Singleman was his inspiration.

Dave Singleman represents the "successful" salesman who makes his living with no more than a phone call. He is the epitome of success, a success to which men like Willy would aspire.
