Why did Willy and his two sons have good relationship before?

Willy and his sons had a good relationship well into their teenage years. He seems to have been a hinds on father, interested in their activities, particularly things they were good at. It wasn't until his sons were older and began to see the superficiality of their father, as well as their father's faults and infidelities that they pulled away.
