Death of a Salesman

Why is this an important read?

yeah, this is for an english essay which i need to write.

Is it because it teaches people not to expect certain things from the american dream? that it is a literary work which shows the truth in reality?

It is a play which takes the tradition of tragedy as the fall of a great man, into the more realistic forum of the fall of an ordinary man. Willy Loman is an ordinary man trying to keep up with the ever-changing pace of the consumerist lifestyle. In his preface to the play, Miller categorises the demise of Willy as breaking the 'law of success' - he is a failure in the society, and therefore doomed.
