How does materialism play a part in Easy's troubles?

What does that tell you about materialism and American culture? How is his materialism wrapped up with his characters identity?

Right from the start we see the most important example of Easy's materialism (note- I don't see him as an overly materialistic person), which is the pride he feels in homeownership. Easy's pride in having his own home and garden helps to negate his view that blacks are merely second class citizens. The thought of losing his home is what leads him to fall in with Mr. Albright's schemes.
