Protagonist's conflict?

David's beggest challenge (conflict) is coming to terms with the reality of animal shelters, and his assitance with the process of euthanizing animals. When we first meet David, he is certain that animals have no souls. Over the course of the novel, however, he comes to understand their true worth, and rather than simply performing an unpleasant task (euthanization), he becomes determined to make each animal's last moments..... moments of dignity.
