Why is Beatrice not allowed to look into a mirror but every three months?

This is mentioned in the very first chapter and is an Abegnation rule. Abegnation placed no importance on looks, thus, it forbid mirrors. Beatrice was only allowed to look in the mirror on days when her mother cut her hair.
