On page 54, Beatrice and other Dauntless initiates discuss jumping from the train and onto the rooftop-Beatrice says she would rather be dead than what? Why do you think she says this?

Tris says, I don’t agree with him. I would rather be dead than empty, like the factionless. If one doesn't have a faction, they have no identity: one is "empty"
