Al is jealous (as are others) that Tris is ranked number one, because of this he kidnaps and wants to kill her.

That is not true. Al is in love with tris and after seeing tris with Tobias he becomes jealous and try's to scare her. By pushing her toward the chasm although you can tell by his struggling voice he does try to keep her on the ledge while the others are still trying to push her over. The noises alert Tobias and he saves her
