Doris Lessing: Stories

Why doesn't Jerry (from "Through the Tunnel" by Doris Lessing) care about asserting his new independence in a "battle of wills" with his mother?

Explain in your own words if you can.

Without a father, Jerry has no need to assert his approaching manhood and independence. Although his mother worries and protects him, her interest is his well being. She doesn't ask questions, and he doesn't give her details.
