what might be a reason for stevenson's not telling us what happened to lanyon? what other important details are left unexplained at this point

Apparently Jekyll's confession and transformation was so shocking to the very logical Lanyon, that he dies. I think Stevenson keeps the exact details about his demise a secret to spur the reader's own imagination to what terrible things took place.
