What is the effect of including a newspaper report within the narrative?

The newspaper report in the beginning of Chapter Seven explains the arrival of the ship that Dracula arrives on. It described the storm, the foreign schooner, and the schooner's safe landing. It also describes the great dog..... the schooner's only living survivor, setting the stage for the events to come.
