The characters in Dubliner are all a part of their individual social levels and have little chance of upward movement. Whether a mother desires to marry her daughter into another social level by choice or a young man loses everything he has to invest in a card game, there is the constant desire to do better and be better. Regardless of that movement however, class crossings are virtually impossible.
