Farrington is angry about life in general...... nothing seems to be going right, and anything he can think of to make life a bit easier becomes impossible.

His boss is angry at him and threatens to report him because he hasn't met a deadline; the more nervous he gets, the more difficult he finds it to concentrate..... nervous thoughts lead to thoughts of relaxing, and then return again to the fact that his work isn't done and he won't be able to get an advance.

When he gets home things are even worse, and he becomes completely overwhelmed..... his wife is at church, dinner isn't ready, the fire has gone out, and as a result..... he beats his son.
