These two lines introduce the poem with a bit of personification thrown in for good measure. Here we have a young man (or woman), who is happy and free from care. The house is lilting (singing), which personifies the house and sets the mood for the rest of the poem. Happy as the grass was green is a simile which invokes the happiness and joy of the speaker.
