The Hebrew word "Timshel" means "thou mayest." This word becomes one of the novel's most important symbols. Its meaning explains the novel's theme that mankind isn't predestined to act in a certain way; people aren't just good or bad/ saintly or evil. Humans have a choice in their actions; we choose right or wrong, it doesn't choose us. This defines the entire meaning of the novel.
