East of Eden
What role does guilt play, especially in Caleb?
For example, the idea of Timshel. Also Aron joining the army and dying.

Cal is sort of a Cain-figure from the Old Testament. He is, indirectly, responsible for his brother's death. He revealed to Aron that their mother is a prostitute. This leads Aron to join the army (WW1) where he gets killed. Although Caleb denies any responsibility, he has a lot of guilt to deal with.
