The Man Who Was Almost a Man

What does Dave’s getting on the train at the end of "The Man Who Was Almost a Man" symbolize? Do you believe that Dave has become mature at the end of the story? Why? Why not?

In my opinion, Dave has not matured over the course of the story, which is evident in his refusal to take responsibility for his mistakes, and in turn, to run away from the same. The gun, which David takes with him to the station, serves as a symbol of manhood, as he believes that possession of the gun is what defines him.
