There is a slightly different tone from stanza to stanza. The first stanza holds a sense of happiness and excitement about being with this man in the carriage. We slowly learn that the speaker is dead and only reflecting on the past. The tone becomes morose with a sense of longing. We learn that her carriage journey was far longer than she thought: it would be into eternity.
