The poem moves from the nerves, which have been deadened and no longer respond (like tombs), then to the Heart, which is dealing with shock and denial (the heart is stiff and questions), to the feet, which continue to shuffle through life just not aware of what they are doing (mechanical, go round/A wooden way).
