Many believe that "Much Madness Is the Divinest Sense" implies Emily's frustration with her own intellect as it stands in a male-dominated society.

In "The Soul Selects Her Own Society", Emily is saying that the soul must live "by one's own choice", not as dictated by society. Her soul defied the times and chose to live a very different life of seclusion.
