Note, in my opinion, Emma is not really a feminist novel. The plot revolves around matchmaking, and even Emma, ends the novel happily married and willingly taking on the role of wife. What Austen does do, although not in an overtly feminist manner, is point out the plight of women, who are financially dependant upon others, and also the double standard that existed between men and women.
