Can you compare this to the way that Athletes are trained?

I'm not sure what you are comparing here, but athletes would be trained in much the same way Ender was molded in the novel. If an athlete does not adhere to the direction of his coach or team leader.... he/she won't have a place on the team for very long, regardless of talent.
