What do you learn about Lourdes and her situation?

In Chapter One, we learn that Lourdes is living with a man named Santos in the states, with whom, she has another child (Diana). We also learn that Santos take the money they've been saving and returns to Honduras, abandoning Lourdes with the promise that he intends to build a new life for them there. As a result, Lourdes is forced to move into a carport, takes on numerous temporary jobs, and must pay off gang members to avoid trouble with them.
