From Isabel's description, life was very difficult for the immigrants in America. Hard work was essential, childhoods were cut short, education was basically non-existent, everyone had a role to play and families depended on each member to do their part.

They lived in tents and had no electricity and had to carry their water. Work was very hard and school was non existent
