Explain what does setting of "Ethan Frome" by Edith Wharton have to do with the plot.
The setting is late nineteenth century in rural Starkfield, Massachusetts. THe setting is conducive to the sense of isolation and loneliness that pervades the story. Ethan's isolation is reflected in the wide empty fields and snowy trails. There is a coldness about the setting as well which matches Ethan's relationship with his wife.
