Ethan pursued studies in science and technology very briefly after high school, but his father's death and his mother's illness forced him back to the Frome farm. Poverty and responsibility have prevented him from leaving Starkfield.Ethan never strays from his "situation" even though it is depressing and oppressive.

You have to be responsible to not go to school and work on the farm out of responsibility to your parents. He also sticks it out with Zenobia, his sickly annoying wife.
