Dee can't get beyond her own feelings of superiority to really know anyone. Her treatment of her mother and sister is selfish and thoughtless. She even goes so far as to accuse her mother of not understanding her own heritage...... Mama understands the love and traditions, whereas, Dee wants to hang what she believes is tradtition on a wall.... unused, and untouched..... a conversation piece. She won't cherish the quilt or the time put into make it...... she simply wants to have it for the sake of being able to say she has it. Thus, no, she doesn't know or understand her mother. If she did, she would never temerity to ask.
