How do Maggie's scars affect her life

Consider the way that Maggie is introduced to the reader,

"Have you ever seen a lame animal, perhaps a dog run over by some careless person rich enough to own a car, sidle up to someone who is ignorant enough to be kind to him? That is the way my Maggie walks."

Maggie hides in the shadows when people who intimidate her visit. Her physical scars are also her psychological scars. She hides behind corners ashamed of herself both in body and spirit.
