Maggie has stayed on their rustic farm fully accepting the life that Mama has planned out for her. Maggie feels there is nothing better for her and accepts the fact that she will live a life much like Mama's. We do not know if there is any deep seated resentment under Maggie's fear and shame. Although she shows her displeasure over Dee's demand of the quilts while hiding in the kitchen, she will accept whatever Mama's decision will be. Mama loves Maggie but in the sort of way someone might love a lame animal. Mama uses Maggie as an antithesis of the "successful" and pretty Dee who has rebuked her so many times.
