What stands in the way of the the protagonist's easily achieving her goal?

I feel the protagonist in the story is Mama rather than Dee. Mama wishes she could reconcile her past with Dee and become closer to her. Unfortunately Dee's insensitive and aggressive behavior prevents this from happening.
