Why does Mr. Black choose to live with his hearing aid turned off? How does his life change when Oskar turns it on?

Mr. Black believes his hearing aids are defective, thus, he keeps them turned off. When Oskar fixes them (turns them up), Mr. Black is amazed at the sounds that surround him...... things as simple as birds flying. Oskar gives Mr. Black a reason to return to the world.
