Fahrenheit 451
5. How does Montag reach his own definition of happiness?
?
?
I think that just breaking out of his former life was a great step in his happiness. Montag might as well have been in a coma for much of his life until he meets Clarisse. It is Clarisse's question, "are you happy?" that really wakes Montag up. He was content with his status quo of burning books and shutting his mind off in the evening. After he Montag speaks with Clarisse, it is like he awakes from a sleep to see the world in a new more meaningful way. Montag is happy to learn about classic literature. By the end of the novel, Montag is just discovering what happiness is.
