Fahrenheit 451

8.01 Graded Assignment: Fahrenheit 451, Introduction

After the paramedics leave, Montag walks across the lawn and stands outside Clarisse McClellan’s house. Unlike every other home, it is brightly lit and inside Montag hears the voices of the family “talking, talking, talking, giving, talking, weaving, reweaving their hypnotic web.” What does Montag want to do as he listens to the McClellan’s talk? What does his reaction suggest about Montag at this point?

From the text:

He stood outside the talking house in the shadows, thinking he might even tap on their door and whisper, "Let me come in. I won't say anything. I just want to listen. What is it you're saying?"

From the text, we can infer that Montag is beginning to look for meaningful things in his life..... he feels as if something is missing.
