The city is oppressive and intellectually constraining. The city is too comfortable and it lulls people into the numbness of ignorance. The country is physically hard on Montag but also emancipating. Like Thoreau's Walden, Montag is able to feel life; he is able to reflect and think; he is able to feel human again.
