Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles are housewives and friends of Millie. They all share the same interest in the television, as well as simplistic outlooks on life. During their visit, their conversation reveals their selfishness and lack of purpose. They are unconcerned about their husbands, detached and uninterested in their children, and focused on appearances above all else...... as evidenced in their choice for president. The two women surprise themselves and Montag by becoming emotional during his poetry reading.
