His relationship to fire begins (and begins to change almost immediately) as what he does; he's a fireman, and he doesn't really think twice about the profession or the ramifications. His personal development in the novel begins shortly after the introduction, as soon as he's officially introduced to books and begins to understand the things he thoughtlessly destroys.

After this, he questions everything; his wife, his boss, and himself. Fire becomes an object or symbol of rebellion.
