explain what the purpose is of having mrs.phelps and mrs.bowles in the story?

These women represent what society has become. They are happy with the illusion of happiness and ask for nothing more. To enlighten them in anyway is an immediate threat to them emotionally. Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles reiterate what we already know.
