Beatty certainly got on Montag's nerves. Beatty tormented Montag and even caused him to burn his house down. I think, however, Beatty wanted Montag to kill him. In the end, Beatty just kind of stood there screaming at people. He was egging Montag on to end his life. It makes sense. Beatty certainly understood what Montag did. Beatty was well read and an intellectual. Instead of seeking salvation in books, he turned all his conflicting emotions to hate. He could not go on like this, he wanted to die the same way he spent his life destroying the truth.
