The women and this society put so much value on physical appearance. How do they demonstrate how valuable an attractive person is?
My page numbers don't match yours. Attractive people are the only people that Mildred and her friends seem interested in. In reality they are not really people rather than images on their parlour walls. When confronted by anything with substance, like the poem Dover Beach, they do not know how to react.
