Despite her age of seventeen, Montag sees Clarisse with an wise mysteries quality about her, "like the dial of a small clock seen faintly in a dark room in the middle of the night ...all certainty and knowing what it had to tell of the night passing swiftly on toward further darknesses, but moving also toward a new sun." Montag finds comfort in her soft predictability. He also sees Clarisse as a mirror into which he can see his own soul. He says that she takes an image, "of you and throws back to you your own expression, your own innermost trembling thought." In both cases, Clarisse in a mentor figure that allows Montag to reawaken from his sleep of ignorance and acceptance of the status quo.
