how is the death of the substitute montag symbolic?

The "fake Montag" is not real much like most things in this society. The state promotes things and ideas without meaning. When the fake Montag is killed, the population does not care tone way or the other. They are lost in accepting the status quo of the state as they accept everything else that the state feeds them.
