Clarisse, to put it simply, makes Montag think. She's responsible for his awakening. After spending time with her, Montag begins to questions the things he doesn't understand and looks for the knowledge to understand the things he's never dared to question. She sparks his curiosity, and then she's gone. Her purpose in the novel is to make him look at himself, and as a character, she fulfills her purpose.
