Fahrenheit 451
What is ironic about the broadcast of the chase?

This chase is put public to entertain people. The actual context of the chase is filled with meaning, truth and everything that is wrong with society. Yet the chase is treated as one dimensional brain rotting entertainment. There is also a sense of irony because the state can't show the chase for too long because people expect a vapid explosive conclusion,
"They're faking. You threw them off at the river. They can't admit it. They know they can hold their audience only so long. The show's got to have a snap ending, quick!"
Montag is drawing this out. The people are not used to it.
