Why did Beatty want to die?

Beatty is a paradox. He loves what he destroys. Beatty loves books and the wisdom they give yet has been conditioned to destroy them. He is tearing himself apart. Beatty is a very sad man underneath all that aggression. He was baiting Montag because he really had enough.
